Manotick

Bridge Street

Plenty has been happening along Bridge Street in Manotick in terms of mobility improvements. The Van Vliet extension was finally completed and is now open. We have made improvements to the Manotick Main Street/Bridge Street intersection allowing northbound traffic to move more smoothly with a dedicated right turn lane and restricting the left turn. Further, we constructed a new signalized intersection at the corner of Dickinson Street and Bridge Street. This project includes the realignment of Dickinson Street to come out directly across from Dickinson Circle and will allow for much improved pedestrian crossings for the future residents of Orchard View on the Rideau as well as existing Manotick residents.  With the opening of the Strandherd/Armstrong Bridge, we have seen a reduction in traffic.  In Fall 2014, the City will be conducting traffic studies to determine the full impact of the new bridge.

Boat Launch

The boat launch that is located next to the Long Island Aquatic Club was acquired by the City of Ottawa in 2011. Upon losing the dock to Parks Canada, we have gone through three seasons without a dock but the launch remains open at no cost to users. In 2015, through cooperation between the City and the Manotick Village & Community Association, a dock will be installed at the site which will allow for safer access to the water for all users. It has not yet been determined if we will return to a user fee system.

Secondary Plan Review

After last being reviewed upon amalgamation, the Manotick Secondary Plan is currently undergoing an 18-month review process that will heavily involve the community. The City, the community and my office will work together to update this plan with a strong focus on the future of the village core. With no village boundary expansions between now and, at least, 2019, our focus will also be on the future of growth in the village and how to protect and enhance our main street and heritage properties.

Road Renewal

As part of Ottawa on the Move, Long Island is slated for resurfacing in 2014. However, there are also plans to install a watermain along Long Island Road in 2016 as a backup supply for Manotick and Barrhaven. This watermain will come in from Riverside South, travel along Long Island Road and Van Vliet before crossing over to connect near the fire hall. Because of the proximity of these projects and the desire not to reconstruct the same road twice, Long Island Road will not be resurfaced in 2014 and I am working with City staff to twin these projects for completion in 2016. The goal is to use the combined savings of twinning these projects and add a sidewalk to the project along Long Island Road creating a safer option for students and pedestrians alike.
